Gratitude is among the first words Alfonso uses when talking about Arlington Thrive, a place where he says the staff has treated him with respect. Alfonso came to the US from Guatemala two decades ago to make enough money to support his children back home. It hasn’t been an easy life: he rents a room and works as a day laborer in construction, all the while sending money to his children. Covid led to a drastic cut in his hours, and some of his friends have been sick. Eventually he found his way to Thrive and is so grateful for their help in catching up on his rent. “Otherwise, I don’t know what I would do,” he says.
