At Arlington Thrive, we believe that no neighbor should face a health crisis alone—especially not our elderly neighbors who have spent decades contributing to the fabric of our community. Sylvia’s story is just one example of the quiet battles many older adults in Arlington face every day. But behind each story is a broader reality: a growing population of seniors confronting serious health challenges with limited resources and support.
Arlington County is home to more than 28,000 residents aged 65 and older—about 12% of the population. This number is expected to rise significantly over the next decade as the Baby Boomer generation continues to age.
While Arlington is often seen as a prosperous and well-resourced community, many older adults here live on fixed incomes and face mounting health and housing costs. Despite Arlington’s wealth, over 9% of seniors live below the poverty line. Many more are just above it, struggling to afford medications, home care, or even rent. The cost of long-term care is rising, and the availability of geriatric specialists and affordable in-home support remains limited. Transportation to medical appointments is another barrier, especially for those with mobility issues.
Older adults in Arlington, like elsewhere, are disproportionately affected by chronic illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes, and arthritis. Falls remain a leading cause of injury-related hospitalizations among seniors, and mental health challenges—especially depression and isolation—are on the rise.
Medical crises can quickly lead to housing instability for older adults, especially those living on fixed incomes. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, seniors who are severely cost-burdened—spending more than 50% of their income on housing—often have little left for essentials like food, medications, or in-home care. This financial strain can force difficult choices, such as skipping treatment or risking eviction
This is where Arlington Thrive steps in.
For five decades, Arlington Thrive has been a vital part of the county’s social safety net. Our mission is simple but powerful: to provide timely, direct financial assistance to neighbors in crisis. When an elderly resident like Sylvia faces a sudden health emergency—whether it’s a hospital stay, a broken medical device, or the inability to pay for prescriptions—we act quickly to fill the gap.
We work closely with Arlington County’s Aging and Disability Services Division, local hospitals and clinics, and community partners to ensure that no one falls through the cracks. But the need is growing, and we can’t do it alone.
