April marks a significant moment for the global community as it is recognized worldwide as Autism Awareness Month. This dedicated time offers an opportunity to increase understanding, acceptance, and support for individuals on the autism spectrum and their families.

Autism, or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), is a complex developmental condition that manifests differently in each individual. From challenges with social communication and interaction to sensory sensitivities and repetitive behaviors, autism presents a unique set of strengths and struggles for those living with it. However, it’s crucial to recognize that autism is just one aspect of a person’s identity—it does not define them.

When Rumanna, a mother to a son with autism, came to Arlington Thrive seeking career support from our Community Navigator, we were able to connect her to our local partners and get her started down the path of a remote career that works with her, and her sons, needs. With Arlington Thrive’s help, Rummana was able to start her career as a medical coder, allowing her the flexibility and income to support her family.
