How One Childcare Placement Kept a Family Moving Forward
Every story has a beginning.
For young children, those beginnings often start in a classroom, surrounded by caring teachers and opportunities to learn, grow, and thrive. For parents, access to childcare can mean the difference between maintaining stability and facing difficult choices about work, family, and finances.
This is the story of how a community came together to ensure one Arlington child didn’t lose that opportunity.
For many Arlington families, access to childcare is essential to maintaining employment and financial stability. Yet the cost can be overwhelming. Today, an Arlington family with one infant in center-based care can expect to pay more than $33,000 per year, or about $2,780 per month, for childcare, making it more expensive than the average monthly rent in Arlington. For families already stretching every dollar, even a temporary interruption in childcare assistance can put work, education, and long-term stability at risk.
When Arlington Thrive’s Early Childhood Program Manager, Sarah Slough, met with Arlington Montessori House(opens in new tab), a partner childcare provider, the center’s director asked about a student who had not returned when the new school year began.
The child, whom we’ll call Edith, had previously been connected to the center through Arlington Thrive’s Affordable Childcare Program. Concerned, Sarah reached out to Edith’s parents, Jackie and Thomas, and learned that the family was waiting for approval of their childcare subsidy renewal before sending Edith back to school.
Without that approval, the family feared they would be unable to afford tuition. They also worried that Edith’s spot at the center might be filled before the process was complete.
Sarah encouraged Jackie and Thomas to speak directly with the director at Arlington Montessori House to explain their situation. They did, and the response was extraordinary.
Understanding the family’s circumstances, the center invited Edith to return to school immediately, even before the subsidy approval had been finalized. In effect, the center temporarily absorbed the cost of care through its own financial aid resources, ensuring Edith could continue attending school without interruption.
For Edith, it meant continuity, routine, and a strong start to the new school year.
For Jackie and Thomas, it meant one less crisis to carry.
But Arlington Thrive’s support didn’t stop there.
Sarah also contacted the childcare subsidy team at the Arlington County Department of Human Services to determine the status of the family’s application. Through diligent follow-up, Arlington Thrive identified missing documentation, helped the family gather the necessary paperwork, assembled a complete application packet, and resubmitted it for review.
Over the following days, Sarah remained in close contact with both the family and the county team, helping move the process forward and ensuring nothing fell through the cracks.
Just a week and a half after the documents were submitted, the family’s subsidy was approved.
This outcome was about more than paperwork.
It meant Edith could continue learning alongside her classmates. It meant her parents could focus on work and family responsibilities without the looming uncertainty of losing childcare. And it demonstrated the power of partnership between Arlington Thrive, childcare providers, and public agencies working together on behalf of local families.
Stories like Edith’s remind us that childcare is more than a service. It is a pathway to opportunity, allowing children to thrive while helping parents remain employed, pursue education, and build a more stable future for their families.
At Arlington Thrive, we know that stability often begins with access. Access to childcare. Access to support. Access to people who are willing to help navigate complicated systems when challenges arise.
Every child deserves the opportunity to learn and grow.
Every parent deserves the opportunity to work and build a brighter future.
And every beginning deserves the chance to flourish.
