Arlington Community Foundation logoArlington Thrive is proud to provide support to our neighbors in need through our Community Resilience Fund, keeping hundreds of families cool during blazing summer days and warm during the coldest nights of the year. Every winter, Arlington Thrive sees an uptick in emergency utility requests to cover the most basic of needs: heat.

Several factors contribute to the rising need for utility and rent support:

  1. Rising Housing Costs: The cost of housing has been steadily increasing, outpacing wage growth. Many families are spending a significant portion of their income on rent, leaving little room for other essential expenses.
  2. Utility Price Hikes: Utility costs have also been on the rise, driven by factors such as increased energy prices and infrastructure costs. This imposes an additional financial burden on households already struggling to make ends meet.
  3. Economic Instability: Economic fluctuations, including job losses and reduced working hours, have left many families with reduced incomes. This instability makes it difficult for them to cover basic living expenses.
  4. Insufficient Support Programs: While there are programs designed to help low-income families, the demand often exceeds the available resources. This gap leaves many neighbors without the necessary support to maintain stable housing and utility services.

Thanks to the Arlington Community Foundation’s (ACF) Nonprofit Wish-List, our wish came true – $5,000 dedicated to covering utility bills for those in need across the county. Thanks to ACF’s generosity, we were able to help 20 families keep their heat on throughout the month of January.

The rapid consumption of the $5,000 grant underscores the severity of the situation. Arlington Thrive provides a critical lifeline for individuals and families facing financial crises, offering immediate assistance to prevent homelessness and utility shutoffs. Our efforts are a testament to the importance of community support systems in addressing urgent needs. Together, we can provide more than a warm home, we can create a stable environment that allows families to focus on work, school, and their future without the fear of losing heat or power this winter.
