Maribel feeling better with her childrenDespite the affluence of our community, far too many individuals silently bear the burden of income inadequacy. They face the harsh reality of being unable to afford basic necessities, such as food, shelter, and childcare. Maribel, a single mother of three, exemplifies the human face behind this pressing issue.

Maribel’s Struggle: A Call for Attention and Support

By the time Maribel sought support, she was in a state of crisis. The pain from a badly infected tooth was keeping her awake at night, making it impossible for her to care for her children. Fearful of the financial burden, Maribel had been reluctant to seek help earlier. With an annual income of less than $20,000, every cent was carefully allocated to meet the basic needs of her family—rent, food, and essentials for her children.

Our partnership with the Arlington Free Clinic allowed her to receive a same-day emergency visit, giving her the immediate attention she needed. Upon evaluation, it was determined that a root canal was the best solution to save her tooth. Understanding Maribel’s financial constraints, the dentist at the clinic was relieved to know that Arlington Thrive’s financial assistance was available, ensuring she could proceed with the necessary treatment.

Sadly, Maribel is far from alone, as illustrated in our Getting By campaign, which sheds light on the pervasive inequality faced by many families in our community. Recent data highlights the fact that a staggering 52% of residents in South Arlington struggle to afford basic necessities.
